How and Why did you get into the design Industry?  Where did you study?
I actually never planned on owning a design firm. I enjoyed furnishing my own home and always knew that I had a knack for it, but I never dreamed it would be a career. My expectation was always to work in the business world. I studied at Emory University in Atlanta and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. My course of study was business all the way with a concentration in accounting and finance. I went on to get my MBA and became a CPA at an early age. What I did have was an undeniable interest in was being an entrepreneur. I come from a long line of business owners, and when I analyzed what type of business I wanted to own, it eventually made sense to combine my love of furnishings with my desire to own a business. I created a business plan, hired two immensely talented designers, and 30 employees later the rest is history.

How would you describe your design style? How varied are your designs?  Do you have a signature touch with your designs?
I grew up in Tennessee, and I’m a Southern woman at heart. I love marble, white woodwork, and wraparound porches. My personal design aesthetic is definitely clean and classic with a smattering of unexpected elements throughout. That principle translates from my wardrobe to my own home. Now as far as working with clients goes, my goal is always to create an elevated version of whatever my clients envision. I think my team and I are known for a certain aesthetic – there’s a timelessness to the design that my team and I do, regardless of the style category itself.

With the advent of social media and sites that promote design, we have gained an incredible following of clients who come to us for our take on a transitional style. I think it appeals to people because it manages to be both timeless and completely comfortable. We design spaces where people can truly live – where interiors can come alive with the people in them. For me, this often includes white enameled mill-work, contrasting wall colors tending toward neutral greys, and bright or unexpected colors accenting the room. The look is usually calming, refined and streamlined.

That being said, my team and I love nothing more than to work in a variety of styles. How perfectly boring to never work in design styles that are new and challenging! Recently, we’ve been designing quite a few more strongly traditional homes. We’ve been working on a steampunk project, too.

What do you love about being a designer? Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I think every designer loves it most when she has a true partnership with her client. In my experience, every client likes to work differently, and the chance to understand a client’s lifestyle and aesthetic, to puzzle together everything being said and all the things that a client might not know how to articulate…those are the best projects to me. When a client trusts you, and you have done your homework, the project sings. They will let you take their project in directions they never envisioned without violating their original intent for the space. Creating meaningful and lasting relationships with our clients is the number one objective of this firm and makes every project a treasured experience.

In terms of inspiration, that also starts with the client. Our team stays so well informed on the latest products and designs available that when we home in on what is most important to a client, we can move quickly with the best solutions at our fingertips.

What are some of your most popular designs/projects?  Tell us a bit about some of your designs/projects and what you love about them.  What’s your favorite and why?
I certainly favor some of our design work over others only because it resonates with my personal aesthetic. Aside from that, I am truly impressed every time my design team feels that we have knocked it out of the park. My designers mean everything to me and their infectious enthusiasm for particular projects, their desire to promote it, have it photographed, entered into design competitions, etc. excites me and creates a natural affinity for me with that project.

TOP Interior Designer Martha O'HaraIs there anything exciting that you are working on at the moment that you can tell us about?
One of the most unexpected phenomena for us has occurred through our online presence, and that is the worldwide following we have amassed. We have had people from around the globe inquire about our products and services and it has literally changed our business model. Recently, we began working on a project for a delightful couple who are based in New Delhi, India. They visited our studio, and we are now designing two family homes for them in India. Our goal there is to combine the designs they love with a new (for us) architectural style, their cultural essence, and meet all the needs of their lifestyle. It’s a thrilling project for us and we can’t wait to see how it unfolds.

What are your design dreams/goals?
This answer is simple, and may seem altruistic but it is genuine. My passion as a business owner and my true love for everyone in my company yields a desire to have a happy, harmonious work environment.  My business has grown so quickly that I have really had to work to make sure we are implementing a business infrastructure/space which can keep up with the amount of work my designers are producing.  I want their creativity to be unbridled and unrestricted so I have the best materials available to them within the studio. To have a design firm that is known for its progressive and innovative design with a strong business model that delivers on value and an unrivaled customer service is the dream for everyone in my business. This is the core of what we do and I believe the secret to our continued success.

I am completely impressed by what I have seen thus far on Martha’s online portfolio and by her stated design philosophy. I am building my own design presence at home in one of the Caribbean islands and allow the inspiration I get from Martha and her team of designers remind me of where I want to go. Would love to meet her…perhaps next time I am in Miami…This is a spotlight well deserved.
